The OR is the specialty escape floor nurses dream about — one patient at a time, asleep, a defined scope, and specialty pay. But every posting says 'OR experience required.' Here's how nurses actually break in when they don't have it yet.
An operating room (OR) nurse — also called a perioperative or periop nurse — cares for surgical patients before, during, and after their procedure. There are two core roles: the circulating nurse, who manages the room from outside the sterile field (patient advocacy, documentation, coordinating the team, counts), and the scrub role, who works within the sterile field passing instruments. RNs most often circulate; scrubbing is done by RNs or surgical techs depending on the facility. It's procedural, team-based, and case-driven rather than managing a floor of patients — and many hospitals pay it as a specialty with differentials.
The honest reality
OR is the classic 'experience required — but how do I get experience?' trap, and unlike some exits you usually can't talk your way in on adjacent skills alone. The real keys are AORN Periop 101 (the standardized OR-training program many hospitals run) and OR residencies/fellowships built specifically for nurses with no OR background. You break in through a training pipeline or a procedural feeder role and an internal transfer — not by answering 'senior OR RN' postings you can't qualify for.
Stepping-stone roles that get you in the door:
CNOR Exam Prep / Review
Once you have OR experience and are eyeing CNOR, a current review guide is the place to start. (CCI doesn't endorse any single prep product.)
Alexander's Care of the Patient in Surgery
The classic perioperative reference; useful for learning the field before and during Periop 101.
