How to Become an Operating Room Nurse

What the role is

An operating room (OR) nurse, also called a perioperative or periop nurse, cares for surgical patients before, during, and after their procedure. There are two core roles: the circulating nurse, who manages the room from outside the sterile field (patient advocacy, documentation, coordinating the team, counts), and the scrub role, who works within the sterile field passing instruments. RNs most often circulate; scrubbing is done by RNs or surgical techs depending on the facility. It's procedural, team-based, and case-driven rather than managing a floor of patients, and many hospitals pay it as a specialty with differentials.
