Does my BSN coursework or NCLEX prep count as continuing education?

No. Continuing education (CE) has to be earned after you're licensed, from a board-approved provider. The credits from your nursing degree and your NCLEX review hours don't count toward the CE your state requires to renew.

When is my first nursing license renewal?

It depends on your state, and it's often sooner than the full cycle. Many boards align expiration with your birth month, so your initial license period can be as short as several months rather than the standard two years. Check your state's exact rule and put the date somewhere you'll see it.

Do I need CE hours for my very first renewal?

Sometimes. A few states waive continuing education for your first renewal cycle, but many don't, and almost all still require any mandatory topics (like implicit bias or infection control). Confirm your state's first-renewal rule rather than assuming you're exempt.

Does my BLS/CPR card expire at the same time as my license?

No. Your BLS/CPR (and ACLS/PALS, if you hold them) run on their own two-year clock, completely separate from your nursing license. Letting either lapse can pull you off patient care, so both need tracking independently.

What are mandatory CE topics, and how do new grads miss them?

Many states require specific subjects as part of your CE, such as implicit bias, domestic violence, human trafficking, or infection control.
