State Boards of Nursing approve CE in two layers. Layer 1: accreditation. The provider has to hold accreditation that the state recognizes — usually ANCC, sometimes the state board's own approval, sometimes accreditation from a specialty body like AACN. Most major providers carry ANCC, and ANCC is accepted broadly. Layer 2: course content. For state-mandatory topics — Florida's domestic violence requirement, California's implicit bias, Texas's nursing jurisprudence, every state's own version — the specific course has to be written to that state's rule. An ANCC-accredited general course on the same topic usually doesn't satisfy a state-specific mandate.
Audit reviewers are strict about state-mandatory topics. A general ANCC-accredited course titled “Recognizing Domestic Violence” may not satisfy Florida's 2-hour rule unless the course is specifically written for Florida's requirement and cites the relevant statute. Providers usually flag state-specific courses with the state name in the title or a state-approval badge — confirm before you pay.
States that mandate CE Broker reporting (Florida, Kansas, Nevada, New Hampshire, North Dakota, Arkansas, Wyoming, and a handful more) require your hours to be on file with CE Broker by your renewal date — separate from your CE actually counting toward your renewal. Many providers auto-report to CE Broker; others leave it to you. The verdict above flags this when it applies to your state.
