Do I have to retake the NCLEX if my nursing license lapsed?

Usually not. Most lapses resolve with reinstatement paperwork, fees, and CE. Some boards close the reinstatement pathway after long lapses and require re-examination; Connecticut, for example, requires the NCLEX-RN after more than 5 years out of practice, while California requires it at 8+ years lapsed only if you hold no current license elsewhere. Your board's threshold is the one that matters.

What is a nurse refresher course and when is it required?

A board-approved program (classroom plus supervised clinical) that re-qualifies a nurse who has been out of practice. Triggers vary by state: North Carolina requires one at 5 years lapsed without out-of-state practice, New Mexico at 4 years, Texas at 4 years unless you practiced elsewhere. How much does it cost to reinstate a lapsed nursing license?

Reinstatement fees run roughly $50 to $400 depending on the state, plus back renewal fees. If a refresher course applies, tuition typically adds $500 to $2,500 and several months. The per-state guides on this page show each board's published fee.

Is there a national directory of approved refresher courses?

No. There is no national registry; each state board approves its own programs, and a course accepted in one state may not count in another. Always start from your board's approved list, not a course vendor's marketing page.

Should I put my license on inactive status instead of letting it lapse?
