Does the CNM actually raise your pay? (The honest answer)

CNM certification is the gateway to practicing and billing as a nurse-midwife, not an optional pay differential. The income change comes from moving into the CNM role after a graduate program, not from the certificate itself. Compensation depends on setting (hospital, birth center, private practice), call burden, region, and state practice authority. 6Weeks 4–6: Add newborn care and the professional-role content. Immediate newborn assessment and resuscitation basics, newborn transition, breastfeeding support, plus professional issues: scope of practice, informed consent, documentation, and ethical and legal responsibilities.
7Weeks 7–8: Switch to timed, mixed-domain practice. Build stamina for 175 questions in 4 hours and rehearse pacing. The goal is endurance and consistency, not new content.
8Final week: Consolidate, do not cram. Work your error log and high-yield sheets, taper new material, protect sleep, and confirm your PSI test-center logistics.
9Throughout: Keep one error log. Every missed question goes in it with the reason you missed it; the final-week review of that log is the highest-return study activity.

Which exam to take

AMCB certifies both the Certified Nurse-Midwife (CNM, for nurse-midwives) and the Certified Midwife (CM, for non-nurse midwives) through the same examination. The CNM credential requires an active RN license; the CM does not. Both lead to AMCB certification, but state licensure recognition differs, so confirm what your state board recognizes.

Keeping it current

AMCB certification is valid for five years. All certificants are auto-enrolled in the Certificate Maintenance Program (CMP), which requires completing three Certificate Maintenance Modules (one in each practice area) plus 20 contact hours of approved continuing education (the modules do not count toward the 20), and an annual program fee due each May 31.
