A study plan that works

1Weeks 1-2: Map the ANCC Nurse Executive test content outline and benchmark. The exam is organized around leadership domains, so let the outline set your schedule and take a full-length practice set early.
2Weeks 1-6: Run a question bank daily. NE-BC questions are scenario- and judgment-based, so daily reps with rationale review are the spine of the plan.
3Weeks 2-4: Front-load the structures-and-processes and financial domains. Organizational design and governance, staffing and workforce management, budgeting and the financial and human-resource management a nurse leader owns.

5Weeks 4-6: Cover quality, safety, and the regulatory environment. Quality improvement and outcomes, patient safety and risk, accreditation and regulatory standards (including Magnet), and evidence-based practice.
6Weeks 4-6: Add the strategic and professional-role content. Strategic management and program development, healthcare policy and economics, ethics, and professional development of staff.
7Weeks 7-8: Switch to timed, mixed practice. Build stamina for 150 questions in 3 hours and rehearse pacing.
8Final week: Consolidate, do not cram. Work your error log and high-yield sheets (finance, staffing, quality), taper new material, and confirm your Prometric logistics.
9Throughout: Keep one error log. The final-week review of your specific missed questions is the highest-return activity.

Which exam to take

NE-BC is the manager- and director-level nurse-executive credential. ANCC's NEA-BC (Nurse Executive, Advanced) targets senior executives such as CNOs. AONL offers parallel credentials: the CNML (Certified Nurse Manager and Leader) for managers and the CENP (Certified in Executive Nursing Practice) for executives. Choose NE-BC if you manage unit or department operations; NEA-BC or CENP if you are in a senior executive role.

Keeping it current

ANCC certification is valid for 5 years. You renew by maintaining your RN license and completing ANCC's renewal categories (continuing education and professional-development activities), and you may apply up to a year before expiration. How CE counts toward ANCC renewal

75 contact hours every 5 years

At least 60 of the 75 hours must be 'formally approved', from any accredited CNE provider/approver, AMA PRA Category 1 (CME), or Joint Accreditation. It does NOT have to be ANCC-approved. The remaining ~15 may come from other role-relevant CE.

Watch out: Effective Jan 14 2026, hours must be earned within your current 5-year cycle and be directly relevant to your role/specialty; a repeat course never counts twice.
