A study plan that works

1. 1Weeks 1–2: Map the NCC test content outline, then benchmark. Let the exam's domains (general assessment and management, disease processes by system, and professional issues) define your study map. Take a full-length practice set early so your schedule targets your actual weak areas.
2. 2Weeks 1–6: Run a question bank daily. Application-level reps across neonatal management surface gaps reading hides; review every item, right and wrong, and log the reasoning. The qbank is the spine of the plan.
3. 3Weeks 2–4: Front-load respiratory and cardiac. Respiratory distress syndrome, persistent pulmonary hypertension, ventilation strategies and blood-gas interpretation, congenital heart disease and ductal-dependent lesions, and resuscitation per the current Neonatal Resuscitation Program. These carry the most questions and the most clinical weight.
4. 4Weeks 3–5: Cover the remaining systems. Fluids, electrolytes, and glucose homeostasis; neonatal infection and sepsis; neurology (HIE, IVH, seizures); GI (NEC, feeding); hematology and hyperbilirubinemia; and genetics and dysmorphology.
5. 5Weeks 4–6: Add pharmacology, nutrition, and developmental care. Drug dosing and monitoring in the neonate, parenteral and enteral nutrition, thermoregulation, and family-centered and developmental care in the NICU.
6. 6Weeks 4–6: Cover the professional-issues domain. Scope of practice, ethics around viability and end-of-life decisions, informed consent, documentation, and quality and safety. These are easy points many candidates under-study.
7. 7Weeks 7–8: Switch to timed, mixed-domain practice. Build stamina for 175 questions in 3 hours and rehearse pacing. The goal is endurance and consistency, not new content.
8. 8Final week: Consolidate, do not cram. Work your error log and high-yield sheets, taper new material, protect sleep, and confirm your testing logistics (test center or live remote proctoring).
9. 9Throughout: Keep one error log. Every missed question goes in it with the reason you missed it; the final-week review of that log is the highest-return study activity.

Which exam to take

There is one route to NNP board certification: the NCC NNP-BC exam. NCC no longer accepts certificate-prepared (non-graduate) applicants, so a graduate NNP degree is required. Do not confuse the NNP-BC with NCC subspecialty certifications (such as neonatal intensive care RNC-NIC), which are different credentials for different roles.

Keeping it current

NCC certification is valid for three years. Maintenance starts with the Continuing Competency Assessment (CCA), which produces an individualized education plan specifying how many CE hours you need and in which areas; only CE earned after the assessment, addressing the plan, counts. A maintenance application and fee are also required. There is no single flat CE-hour number for active NNP-BC maintenance, it is plan-driven. Confirm the current requirements with NCC.
