OCN is the foundational credential for adult oncology nursing, and demand keeps climbing as cancer care moves outpatient. The exam rewards a focused, question-bank-driven plan. Here is the format, a realistic timeline, and the prep that works.
| Exam | ONCC Oncology Certified Nurse (OCN) |
| Format | 165 multiple-choice questions (145 scored, 20 unscored pretest); computer-based at PSI test centers |
| Time | 3-hour session (includes a short tutorial and post-test survey) |
| Passing standard | Scaled score (25 to 75); 55 required to pass; immediate pass/fail on screen |
| Pass rate | 62% overall, 65% first-attempt (2024); ONCC publishes annually |
| Exam fee | $300 ONS/APHON member, $420 non-member (plus a $75 international testing fee where applicable) |
| Recertification | Every 4 years via ILNA points or by retesting |
Exam specifications and fees change, so always confirm current details with ONCC before registering.
The OCN certifies knowledge in adult oncology nursing. It is administered by the Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation (ONCC). It is the entry oncology credential; ONCC also offers advanced and specialty oncology certifications (such as AOCNP, AOCNS, BMTCN, and CPHON), but OCN is the one most adult oncology RNs pursue first. This guide covers the exam, an efficient study plan, eligibility, fees, and ILNA-based recertification.
~60%
of nurses got no direct pay bump for certifying
$1-2/hr (~$2,000-4,000/yr full-time)
typical raise when employers do pay
$1,000-2,000 one-time at some employers
one-time bonus where offered
Here is the part prep vendors and certifying bodies will not lead with: in a large national compensation survey, about 60% of nurses got no direct pay increase for becoming certified. When it does pay, it is typically $1-2/hr or a one-time bonus, set by your employer, not by ONCC. Oncology is a high-acuity specialty where certification is often expected on a clinical ladder or at a Magnet or NCI-designated center, but the raise (if any) comes from your employer's policy. Ask HR for the exact amount before assuming a bump.

OCN is the foundational adult oncology credential. ONCC also offers the advanced-practice AOCNP and AOCNS, the BMTCN for blood and marrow transplant nursing, and the CPHON for pediatric hematology/oncology. Most adult oncology RNs start with OCN; pursue a specialty or advanced credential only if your role and population call for it.
ONCC certification is valid for 4 years. You renew through the Individual Learning Needs Assessment (ILNA), which generates a learning plan of ONCC Certification Renewal Points (a minimum of 25, up to 100, scaled to your assessment), or by retesting. Confirm the current point and practice requirements with ONCC.
How CE counts toward ONCC renewal
ONCC renews on a 4-year ILNA model. Accredited CE (including ANCC) counts only toward the subject area whose content it matches, and required areas must be filled. Without the ILNA assessment, 100 renewal points matching the test blueprint are required.
