Exam specifications and fees change, so always confirm current details with ABNN before registering.
The SCRN certifies expertise in stroke nursing across the full continuum: prevention, hyperacute and acute care, rehabilitation, and secondary prevention. It is administered by the American Board of Neuroscience Nursing (ABNN). Stroke centers, especially Joint Commission certified ones, increasingly value or expect the credential. This guide covers the exam, who qualifies, an efficient study plan, fees, and recertification.
~60%
of nurses got no direct pay bump for certifying
$1-2/hr (~$2,000-4,000/yr full-time)
typical raise when employers do pay
$1,000-2,000 one-time at some employers
one-time bonus where offered
Here is the part prep vendors and certifying bodies will not lead with: in a large national compensation survey, about 60% of nurses got no direct pay increase for becoming certified. When it does pay, it is typically $1-2/hr or a one-time bonus, set by your employer, not by ABNN. Certified stroke centers often value or expect SCRN on a clinical ladder, but the raise (if any) is your employer's policy. Confirm the dollar amount with HR before assuming a bump.

SCRN is stroke-specific. ABNN also offers the CNRN (Certified Neuroscience Registered Nurse), a broader neuroscience credential covering the full range of neurological conditions. Choose SCRN if your focus is stroke; CNRN if you want the broad neuroscience certification. Some neuro nurses hold both.
ABNN certification is valid for 5 years (it expires December 31 of the fifth complete year). You recertify either by retaking and passing the exam, or by continuing education combined with stroke practice hours (the pathways pair a practice-hours minimum with a CE total). Confirm the current pathway requirements with ABNN.
