Passing the NCLEX makes you licensed, but licenses expire on a set cycle and nothing renews itself. No renewal, no lawful practice.
"I passed the NCLEX, so I'm a nurse, my license just stays active, or renews automatically in the background."
The NCLEX grants your initial license, but every state requires you to actively renew on its cycle, commonly every two years, one year in some states, up to four in others, and nothing renews automatically. A few states (New York, for example) technically keep the underlying license for life but require you to renew a separate registration to legally practice; the practical effect is identical: miss the renewal and you can't lawfully work.
