The Ohio RN reinstatement fee is $100 outside the RN renewal season (higher fees apply if you reinstate during a renewal season; check the Board's fee list), plus any back renewal fees. What else your return takes depends on how long the license has been lapsed: short lapses are paperwork and CE, long ones can add a refresher course.
Grace period: No grace period. A license not renewed by October 31 lapses on November 1, and practicing on a lapsed license is grounds for discipline (OAC 4723-7-09(G)). To get it back you file a separate reinstatement application in eLicense, pay the reinstatement fee, and show 24 contact hours of CE from the 24 months before you apply, including Category A (OAC 4723-14-03(E)). A license lapsed or inactive five years or more also needs a criminal records check.
| Lapsed | Status | Estimated cost |
|---|---|---|
| 2 months lapsed | Late renewal window (likely) | Renewal fee + late penalty (Ohio: $50 late fee on top of the renewal fee for renewals after September 15: $115 single-state, $125 multistate (OAC 4723-7-09(C); Board LPN/RN pages)). Total is usually $100–$300 above the standard fee. |
| 1 year lapsed | Reinstatement required | Reinstatement fee (Ohio: $100 outside the RN renewal season (higher fees apply if you reinstate during a renewal season; check the Board's fee list)) plus back fees for missed renewal cycles. Total typically $300–$800. |
| 3 years lapsed | Reinstatement + likely refresher course | Reinstatement fee (Ohio: $100 outside the RN renewal season (higher fees apply if you reinstate during a renewal season; check the Board's fee list)) plus back fees. If Ohio requires a refresher for your situation, add tuition (typically $500 to $2,500 nationally). Confirm the total with the Ohio Board of Nursing. |
| 6 years lapsed | Deep lapse: Ohio reinstatement pathway | Reinstatement fee (Ohio: $100 outside the RN renewal season (higher fees apply if you reinstate during a renewal season; check the Board's fee list)) plus back fees. If a refresher applies to your situation, add tuition (typically $500 to $2,500 nationally). Confirm the total with the Ohio Board of Nursing. |
