Michigan requires all Registered Nurses, Licensed Practical Nurses, and APRNs to complete 25 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle, with mandatory topics in pain management (2 hours) and implicit bias training (2 hours). A one-time human trafficking awareness module is also required but does not count toward the 25-hour total. Michigan is not currently a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, though compact legislation has been introduced in the state legislature.

A Michigan RN accumulates not less than 25 hours of board-approved CE during the 2 years before license expiration (including at least 2 hours in pain and pain-symptom management) and ATTESTS at renewal; certificates are not submitted at renewal. Per Mich. Admin. Code R. 338.10601: an applicant for license renewal “shall accumulate not less than 25 hours of continuing education that are approved by the board... during the 2 years before the expiration,” and “(4) Submission of an application for renewal constitutes the applicant's certification of compliance with the requirements of this rule. A nurse shall retain documentation of meeting the requirements of this rule for a period of 4 years after the date of applying for license renewal.
