RNC-OB is the credential that marks an experienced labor-and-delivery and inpatient OB nurse. The pass rate dropped sharply in 2025, so a focused, current plan matters more than ever. Here is the exam, a realistic timeline, and the prep that works.
| Exam | NCC Inpatient Obstetric Nursing (RNC-OB) |
| Format | 175 questions (150 scored, 25 unscored pretest); computer-based at a test center or via Live Remote Proctoring |
| Time | 3 hours |
| Passing standard | Criterion-referenced; a fixed passing score (NCC publishes no percentage or scaled cut score) |
| Pass rate | 65% in 2025 (2,079 candidates; down from 86-90% in prior years, likely a content update). Reported as all candidates, not first-time only |
| Exam fee | $325 (includes a $50 non-refundable application fee) |
| Recertification | Every 3 years via the Continuing Competency Assessment (CCA), which generates an individualized education plan |
Exam specifications and fees change, so always confirm current details with NCC before registering.
The RNC-OB certifies specialty knowledge in inpatient obstetric nursing, the care of hospitalized pregnant patients across the antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum periods. It is administered by the National Certification Corporation (NCC) and is for experienced RNs, not advanced practice (it is distinct from the CNM, which is a nurse-midwife credential). This guide covers the exam, an efficient study plan, eligibility, the fee, and NCC's three-year recertification.
~60%
of nurses got no direct pay bump for certifying
$1-2/hr (~$2,000-4,000/yr full-time)
typical raise when employers do pay
$1,000-2,000 one-time at some employers
one-time bonus where offered
Here is the part prep vendors and certifying bodies will not lead with: in a large national compensation survey, about 60% of nurses got no direct pay increase for becoming certified. When it does pay, it is typically $1-2/hr or a one-time bonus, set by your employer, not by NCC. OB units at Magnet facilities often expect RNC-OB on a clinical ladder, but the raise (if any) is your employer's policy. Confirm the dollar amount with HR before assuming a bump.

RNC-OB certifies inpatient obstetric RN practice. NCC also offers C-EFM (electronic fetal monitoring) and RNC-MNN (maternal newborn nursing), which are narrower or lower-acuity; the CNM (from AMCB) is the advanced-practice nurse-midwife credential, a different role entirely. Choose RNC-OB to certify L&D and inpatient OB bedside practice.
NCC certification is valid for 3 years. You maintain it through the Continuing Competency Assessment (CCA), which generates an individualized education plan; only CE earned after the assessment, addressing the plan, counts, and you submit a maintenance application with fee before the due date. Confirm the current requirements with NCC.
