Arizona is unique among the states we track. It does not require continuing education hours. Instead, Arizona uses a continuing competence model where nurses must demonstrate ongoing competence through practice hours (960 hours in the last 5 years), national certification, a relevant degree, or a refresher course. The renewal cycle is every 4 years, also the longest among our tracked states. Arizona is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, so nurses with a multistate license can practice in other compact states.

Arizona requires NO continuing-education hours to renew an RN license, so there is no CE certificate to upload or report at renewal. Renewal is competency-by-practice: the nurse renews online in the AZBN licensing portal and attests to a practice requirement, not CE. The board's renewal page: “Applicants for renewal must meet ONE of the following practice requirements,” and a nurse who has not met the hours follows an alternative competency path (“If I have not worked 960 hours in the past five years, what do I need to do to renew my license?”). The only CE-type mandate is narrow and APRN-only: “APRNs who hold an active DEA license, MUST have completed a minimum of three hours of opioid-related, substance use disorder-related or addiction-related continuing education (as required by Arizona Revised Statute 32-3248.02).” There is no CE Broker, no certificate upload, and no provider reporting for RN renewal.
Where it happens: Arizona Nurse Portal (AZBN online licensing)
azbn.boardsofnursing.orgBecause RN renewal is practice-based rather than CE-hour-based, there is no CE-hours audit for RNs; the Board verifies the practice/competency attestation and may require documentation of practice hours or completion of a Board-approved refresher for a nurse who does not meet the practice requirement. No CE-certificate audit program is published for RN renewal.
