Alabama requires all RNs, LPNs, and APRNs to complete 24 hours of Board-approved continuing education per renewal cycle. The renewal period runs from September 1 through December 31 of the applicable year, with RN and APRN licenses renewing on even-numbered years and LPN licenses on odd-numbered years. Alabama is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, allowing multistate license holders to practice across all compact states. The Board offers free CE courses through its website to help nurses meet their requirements.

Alabama runs its own board-side CE ledger, the Individual CE Record inside the My Profile portal, and renewal is hard-gated on it: "The Renewal process cannot be completed until documentation of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of CE has been uploaded to your CE Record on the ABN website." How hours get there depends on the provider: ABN-approved providers (those with an ABNP number) submit electronic records of contact hours directly to the Board, and nurses are explicitly forbidden from entering that CE themselves ("Do not enter CE earned from a Board-approved provider with an ABNP number"). For CE from Board-recognized providers WITHOUT an ABNP number (e.g., ANCC-accredited national providers), the nurse must self-report it: log in to My Profile and "View, enter, and edit CE hours that have been earned", per rule 610-X-10-.07(1)(d), "Submit to the Board, by electronically uploading to the individual's CE record, documentation of continuing education credit hours earned from Board-recognized providers that do not have an assigned ABNP number." At renewal the nurse also provides "a signed statement of affirmation, under penalty, of the degree of compliance" with CE requirements, and must keep certificates/transcripts for four years to substantiate the hours.
Where it happens: My Profile (ABN website; login system named "MyABNProfile")
abn.alabama.gov/MyABNProfile/Account/Login.aspxBecause Alabama makes you upload your CE at renewal, not just attest, you'll need every certificate on hand. Keep them organized in RenewRN so they're ready when it's time to renew, free CE tracking, no card required.
Selection: "The Board conducts annual random audits of documentation provided on the Individual CE Record at the time of renewal." Notification: per rule 610-X-10-.07(2), notice consists of "a notice of audit letter mailed thirty days prior to the first day of renewal to the address of record" plus "an electronic notice of CE renewal audit identified on the licensee individual profile", so audited nurses know BEFORE the Sept 1 renewal window opens, and the Board warns "it is the nurse's responsibility to ensure the accuracy of mailing and email addresses so that a Notice of Audit may be received." Submission: audited nurses "submit records of continuing education activities/courses completed in the appropriate accrual period", i.e., the certificates/transcripts backing the entries on their Individual CE Record (nurses must retain these four years). Deadline: the code sets no explicit numeric response deadline for nurses (the 30-day document deadline in 610-X-10-.07(5) applies to CE providers, not licensees); the FAQ says "licensees failing to comply with requests for documents within the appropriate time must pay a late CE compliance fee," and per rule, failure to comply with the audit or submitting false/inaccurate/incomplete evidence "may be subject to disciplinary action by the board"; a nurse who fails to provide evidence "shall not have the license renewed."
