Florida requires Registered Nurses (RN) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN) to complete 24 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle. Several mandatory topics are required, including prevention of medical errors, Florida laws and rules, and human trafficking awareness. APRNs with prescriptive authority must complete 3 additional hours on safe prescribing of controlled substances. Florida is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, allowing nurses with a multistate license to practice across compact states. Florida assigns each nurse to one of three renewal groups, so your license expires on April 30 or July 31 of your biennium rather than on one statewide date, confirm your group and exact expiration at flhealthsource.gov. A license not renewed by its date becomes delinquent the day after expiration and Null and Void two years later, so renew on time; a delinquent renewal after expiration runs $130 (a $55 delinquency fee over the $75 timely renewal) and rises to about $205 once 120 days delinquent, and a license left Null and Void for two years must be re-applied for rather than simply reinstated.

Track your renewal steps with ProYou report CE through CE Broker, the board's designated reporting system.
The nurse never sends CE proof to the board. All CE must be in the state's electronic tracking system (CE Broker) before renewal: most Florida-approved providers report course completions automatically, and the nurse self-reports anything missing (out-of-state or national-accreditation courses) via a free CE Broker Basic account, or via the MQA Online Services Portal dashboard ("Additional Activities" > "Report CE/CME"). At renewal, the nurse goes to flhealthsource.gov, clicks "Renew A License," logs in (a "Renew My License" option appears no later than 90 days before expiration), and the Department of Health automatically reviews the CE records in the tracking system as part of the renewal transaction. If records are complete, renewal proceeds without interruption; if incomplete, the system prompts the nurse to enter the remaining CE hours before the renewal can proceed. The board explicitly instructs: "Do not submit certificates of completion of continuing education hours to the Florida Board of Nursing."

flhealthsource.govBecause Florida makes you report your CE at renewal, not just attest, you'll need every certificate on hand. Keep them organized in RenewRN so they're ready when it's time to renew, free CE tracking, no card required.
Florida does not run a traditional random post-renewal CE audit for nurses; it uses 100% automated verification at renewal instead. Board CE page: "The Department of Health, Division of Medical Quality Assurance, will now review your continuing education records in the electronic tracking system at the time of renewal. It will happen automatically when you renew your license," and "If the practitioner's continuing education records are not complete, they will be prompted to enter their remaining continuing education hours before proceeding with their license renewal." FLHealthSource "Are You Renewal Ready" confirms: "The DOH verifies compliance through records in your account." No selection/notification letters or response deadline exist because every renewal is checked electronically; the board's own pages describe no separate audit program (board meeting minutes from Oct 2014 show the audit language was removed from Rule 64B9-5.002, and the current rule text contains no audit or retention clause). Practical consequence of non-compliance: the license goes delinquent at expiration, and per the board's Renewing Process page, "To renew a delinquent license, you will need to report your CE hours for your current cycle, as well as your previous cycle." Note: the common "keep certificates 4 years" advice appears on third-party CE sites; I could not verify a licensee-side retention mandate verbatim on a current official page (provider-side 4-year record retention exists in Rule 64B9-5.003).
