Massachusetts requires all nurses (RNs, LPNs, and APRNs) to complete 15 contact hours of continuing education every 2-year renewal cycle. Mandatory topics include a 1-hour domestic and sexual violence course every renewal and a one-time Alzheimer's/dementia training. At 15 hours, Massachusetts has one of the lowest CE requirements among the states we track. Massachusetts enacted NLC compact legislation on November 20, 2024, and multistate license implementation is in progress. Check with the Board of Registration in Nursing for the latest status on multistate license issuance.

A Massachusetts RN completes 15 contact hours of continuing education within the two years immediately preceding renewal and ATTESTS to compliance at renewal (under the penalties of perjury on the license-renewal application); certificates are not submitted at renewal. Per 244 CMR 5.00, a licensee must complete “15 hours of continuing education within the two years immediately preceding renewal of [the license].” Per 244 CMR 5.05 (Responsibility of Individual Licensee): “It is the responsibility of each licensed nurse to maintain an authenticated record of [CE completion]... evidence should be maintained for two consecutive registration periods” (four years). If selected for audit or named in a complaint, the nurse produces the certificates. The first renewal after initial licensure is exempt.
