New York is unique among states in that it does not require a set number of general CE hours for RNs or LPNs. Instead, nurses must complete topic-specific mandated courses including infection control and barrier precautions (every 4 years per Education Law Section 6505-b) and child abuse identification and reporting. NPs with DEA registration must also complete 3 hours in pain management and palliative care. New York is not a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, so a New York-specific license is required to practice in the state.

New York does NOT require general continuing-education contact hours for RN registration renewal, so there is no CE-hours upload or CE-hours attestation. Registration renews every 3 years (aligned to birth month after the first period). The nurse must instead have completed NYSED-approved MANDATED coursework and attests to it at renewal: “All practicing RNs must complete NYSED approved infection control coursework every four (4) years or qualify for an exemption,” plus one-time child-abuse reporting coursework (both usually satisfied by an NYSED-registered nursing program). No CE certificates are uploaded at renewal; no CE Broker.

Announced change
An April 29, 2026 amendment to the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education further defines the requirement for certain RNs to earn a baccalaureate or higher degree within 10 years of licensure ('BSN in 10'); this is an education requirement, not a CE-submission mechanic.
