Oklahoma requires nurses to demonstrate continuing competency every 2-year renewal cycle. The most common method is completing 24 contact hours of continuing education, though alternatives include 520 practice hours, national certification, or academic coursework. APRNs with prescriptive authority must also complete 15 additional hours in pharmacotherapeutics. Oklahoma is a Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) member state, and licenses expire on the last day of your birth month.

An Oklahoma RN renews by attesting to ONE “continuing qualifications for practice” option for the prior two years, not by submitting CE. Per the board's renewal guidelines, the nurse verifies: (1) at least 520 work hours in a position requiring a nursing license; OR (2) “Completion of at least twenty-four (24) contact hours of continuing [education]”; OR (3) current certification in a nursing specialty area; OR (4) completion of a Board-approved refresher course; OR (5) at least six academic semester credit hours of nursing coursework. CE is one of five options; certificates are not submitted at renewal and proof is produced only if audited.
